The security situation continues to deteriorate in Mexico. While several states have seen a reduction in violence over the past months, other regions – particularly the north-east – are becoming increasingly dangerous, creating new risk zones for travellers. One of the reasons for this trend is the continued rivalry between drug cartels. As drug violence spreads to new areas, travellers and expatriates should familiarise themselves with the changing risk landscape and the various dangers associated with travel throughout Mexico. This assessment looks at the risks associated with travel to areas where violence is increasing rapidly, or has the potential to do so in the next three to six months.
