Exercise caution and expect weather-related disruption in the coming hours in central and north-eastern provinces. The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued orange alerts (second-highest on a four-tier scale) for thunderstorms on 22 December in parts of Corrientes and Formosa provinces. Yellow alerts (second-lowest) are also in effect for surrounding areas in these and other north-eastern provinces, as well as for portions of several central provinces, such as Buenos Aires and San Luis. Heavy rain, strong winds and hail are possible in the affected areas. Reconfirm the status of routes before setting out and plan journeys accordingly.

Exercise caution and expect weather-related disruption over the coming days in central and southern states. The National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) has issued an orange warning (middle on a three-tier scale) for heavy rainfall and strong winds in parts of Amazonas, Ceara, Goias, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Para, Piaui, Rondonia and Tocantins states. The warning is valid until at least 10.00 (local time) on 23 December. An orange warning is also in place for portions of Mato Grosso do Sul, Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states, effective from 00.00 until at least 18.00 on 23 December. Flooding, landslides and road closures are possible, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas.

People due to travel via Wabush Airport (YWK, Newfoundland and Labrador province) over the coming hours should expect disruption and reconfirm flights. The airport’s runway has reportedly been closed since 19 December because of icy conditions, resulting in multiple flight cancellations. According to local sources citing airport officials, the runway is expected to remain closed until at least the early evening on 22 December amid de-icing efforts. Residual delays are likely even after normal operations resume at the airport as airlines attempt to clear the backlog of flights.

Normal movement can resume near Estacion Central in the capital Santiago following a structural fire at warehouses near the intersection of Avenida 5 de Abril and San Francisco de Borja. According to reports, the fire has been extinguished. The authorities had implemented traffic restrictions in the vicinity, including along Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, Avenida 5 de Abril and Hermanos Arellano, but these have now been lifted. At least one person was reportedly injured, and several local businesses were damaged in the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Exercise caution across the country over the coming weeks and monitor developments linked to the announcement of ceasefires by armed groups. On 21 December, the National Liberation Army (ELN) announced a unilateral armistice that will be in effect from 23.59 on 23 December until 23.59 (local time) on 3 January. On the same day, the Central General Staff (EMC) announced a ceasefire from 23 December to 7 January. Despite the ceasefires, the threat of armed clashes and attacks cannot be ruled out, particularly in departments bordering Venezuela where ELN and EMC maintain a strong presence.

Expect a heightened security presence at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL, Georgia state) over the coming hours following an alleged shooting. A man was discovered around 15.30 (local time) on 21 December near the South Terminal baggage claim area with a gunshot wound. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, though unconfirmed witness reports suggest the shot may have resulted from an accidental, self-inflicted firearm discharge. The man is currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital. Flight operations at the airport have not been affected.

Expect weather-related disruption and reconfirm flights at Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) in Reno (Nevada state) over the coming hours. The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a High Wind Warning for Reno until at least 04.00 (local time) on 22 December. While the airport remains operational, there are reports of significant delays and cancellations due to strong winds. At least 30 flights have been affected thus far. Plan journeys accounting for disruption.

Expect disruption in San Francisco (California state) over the coming hours amid a power outage. Restoration efforts are ongoing, with full power expected to be restored by 14.00 (local time) on 22 December. The outage continues to affect the Richmond and Civic Center areas. At least 130,000 customers were impacted by the outage on 21 December, with around 7,000 customers still awaiting restoration. Reports suggest the outage caused significant disruption to road travel and transport services, including the Muni Metro. The authorities are advising those in affected areas to minimise travel as a precaution.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast heavy rainfall of up to five inches (13 cm) for the Northern Sierra and coastal regions until 23 December. Flood watch alerts remain in effect for affected areas until 26 December. Flood warnings are in place for Mason, Mendocino and Shasta counties, while flood advisories are in effect for Butte, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, San Francisco, Sierra, Tehama and Yuba counties. Localised evacuations are possible following heavy rainfall, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas. Reconfirm the status of routes prior to setting out and follow all official directives.
