Eastern provinces: Continue to exercise caution following magnitude 6.0 earthquake east-north-east of Jalalabad (Revised)
Continue to exercise caution in the coming hours after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake at 23.47 (local time) on 31 August. According to the US Geological Survey, the temblor originated 16 miles (27km) east-north-east of Jalalabad (Nangarhar province), at a depth of five miles (8km). Several aftershocks have been reported in the area since, including one of magnitude 5.2. According to the authorities, at least 622 people have been killed and more than 1,500 others injured. Structural damage has been reported in Kunar, Laghman and Nangarhar provinces. Most of the impact has been registered in Kunar province. Follow official directives in affected areas.

Avoid travel near Azad Maidan in Maharashtra state’s capital Mumbai until further notice due to a protest led by ethnic-Maratha activist Manoj Jarange Patil. A hunger strike by Patil on 1 September entered a fourth day. The action is being undertaken in support of the Maratha community’s long-standing demand for job reservations under an official classification. Related protests have caused significant traffic disruption in Mumbai’s Fort area, particularly on routes adjoining Azad Maidan and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj rail terminus (CSMT). The authorities have reinforced security and imposed traffic restrictions in the area.

Exercise caution and expect weather-related disruption over the coming days in Punjab state. Heavy rain since 25 August has caused river levels to rise, inundating villages and low-lying areas. Amritsar, Fazikla, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar and Pathankot districts have been particularly badly affected. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on 1 September issued a red warning (highest on a four-tier scale, meaning ‘take action’) for heavy rain in several districts. Orange (second-highest, meaning ‘be prepared to take action’) and yellow warnings (second-lowest, meaning ‘be updated’) are in effect for the rest of Punjab. Continued severe weather is liable to cause further flooding, power outages and transport disruption.

Avoid demonstrations by students and activists in the capital Jakarta and other urban centres over the coming days due to the risk of unrest and expect heightened security. Protesters are denouncing the police’s use of force at recent student-led demonstrations and the killing of a motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver during one such protest. Demonstrations are planned in several locations of Jakarta on 1 September, including outside the House of Representatives (DPR) building and the Mobile Brigade Corps (Brimob) Polda Metro Jaya headquarters. Further demonstrations are planned on 2 and 3 September will be held around police headquarters and government buildings, and will be well attended.

Avoid non-essential travel through rural areas of northern Thailand until at least 3 September. This comes amid the passage of former Tropical Storm Nongfa, which has weakened to a low-pressure system, and follows the passage of Typhoon Kajiki’s remnants. The weather systems have affected Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok and Sukhothai provinces. The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecast isolated heavy rain and thunderstorms over the coming days in northern Thailand which is liable to cause further flooding and landslides.
