Central, northern states: Exercise caution, expect weather-related disruption over coming hours (Revised)

Level: Advisory
Location: Brazil
Category: Storm, Flood, Landslide, Transport disruption

Exercise caution and expect weather-related disruption over the coming hours in central and northern states. The National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) has further issued an orange warning (middle on a three-tier scale) for heavy rainfall in parts of Acre, Amapa, Amazonas, Ceara, Maranhao, Mato Grosso, Para, Piaui, Rondonia, Roraima and Tocantins states until at least 23.59 (local time) on 21 April. Up to 2.4 inches (6cm) of rain per hour is forecast. Severe weather is liable to exacerbate flooding, landslides and road closures in already affected areas.

Advice

  • Monitor the INMET website (in Portuguese) for information on prevailing weather conditions. Be prepared to adjust itineraries accordingly and allow additional time for journeys.
  • We do not hold information on specific flights or other modes of transport. Reconfirm bookings with the relevant service providers. In the event of cancellations, your travel agent will be able to assist with alternative arrangements.
  • Ensure routes are clear before setting out. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. If you come across one, turn around and seek an alternative route to your destination.
  • Disruption to essential services, such as electricity, is possible. Ensure that all communication devices are charged and, if possible, keep spare batteries as a backup.
  • Monitor our Brazil alerts for updates.

Impact

In Belem, the authorities declared a state of emergency following sustained heavy rainfall and flooding in parts of the city, including in the Terra Firme neighbourhood. At least 5,000 residences are without power following a downed power line in the Pedreira neighbourhood. The authorities have deployed emergency response teams to facilitate clean-up operations.
