Macomia, Meluco, Mocimboa da Praia, Muidumbe, Nangade, Palma and Quissanga districts (all Cabo Delgado province): EXTREME
There is a persistent risk of militant attack or ambush and subsequent security force operations in these areas. The Islamist militant group al-Sunnah has carried out attacks with increasing frequency and violence since October 2017. Following the deployment of troops from regional countries to support the Mozambican army in 2021, the group's capability to stage complex attacks on large, well-secured urban areas has been reduced. However, al-Sunnah continues to stage regular hit-and-run attacks on rural communities and security forces. The group, which has affiliations with the transnational Islamic State (IS) group, is also likely to harm or kill foreign nationals if given the opportunity, possibly to bolster its international reputation or further strengthen its ties to IS. As such, all travel to these areas should be deferred.
