Transnistria: MEDIUM
Travel to Transnistria is precarious because few countries recognise the de facto government, so consular support is limited. Foreign nationals are generally regarded with suspicion. Police corruption is a concern. People wishing to visit the region are advised to use a trusted local driver and/or interpreter. Only selected currencies (such as Russian rubles, US dollars) can be withdrawn from international ATMs in Tiraspol, which can then be exchanged for Transnistrian lei. Specific convertible currencies (Euros, US dollars, Moldovan lei, Russian rubles or Ukrainian hryvnia) should also be in adequate supply to be exchanged to the local currency, as Transnistria operates a predominantly local banking system that has minimal integration with wider international banking networks. Ensure that consular officials in Chisinau are aware of your travel plans and that you are equipped with robust communications, as well as adequate medical and breakdown support.
