RISK ZONES

Abkhazia and South Ossetia: HIGH

The security environment in both secessionist regions is fragile. The political situation is unstable, the rule of law is weak, organised criminal activity is rife and there is a heightened risk of kidnapping. Furthermore, there are several logistical difficulties associated with travel to both territories. Entry into South Ossetia from Georgia is particularly difficult. Although travel to Abkhazia is possible with an Abkhaz visa, anyone travelling there via Abkhaz visa and back into Georgia may be subject to increased scrutiny or refusal of entry by the Georgian authorities.

The immediate border areas also carry increased travel security risks such as the potential for occasional skirmishes and detention, as well as landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). The so-called borderisation initiative along the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) between Georgia and South Ossetia means there has been an increase in the number of demarcation signposts. Remain alert to such signs, which include fences, surveillance cameras and signposts announcing a border when travelling close to the ABL.
