RISK ZONES

Areas within 16 miles (25km) of the Cambodian border: EXTREME

There is a sustained risk of military clashes in the EXTREME-risk border districts of Buriram, Chanthaburi, Sa Kaeo, Sisaket, Surin, Trat and Ubon Ratchathani provinces. This risk is more pronounced in the north-eastern and eastern sectors, where there are more disputed zones and reports of landmines. Land border crossings remain closed.

Areas within 16-30 miles (25-50km) of the Cambodian border: HIGH

In the HIGH-risk area, there is a persistent risk of spillover as Cambodia's weapons systems are capable of targeting military assets and essential infrastructure in the wider province. During periods of heightened military and diplomatic tensions, the authorities may also impose martial law and curfews, which can affect movement in HIGH- and EXTREME-risk areas.

Southern provinces of Yala, Narathiwat, Pattani and the southern districts of Songkhla province: HIGH

The long-running ethnic-Malay separatist insurgency poses a persistent risk of militant attacks in the provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, as well as the southern districts (Chana, Na Thawi, Saba Yoi and Thepha) of Songkhla province. While attacks are usually targeted at government buildings, security checkpoints and military sites and personnel, foreign nationals and business travellers should limit travel in these areas to essential business only.

Bangkok: MEDIUM

Bangkok periodically experiences campaigns of political protests, particularly during times of heightened tensions. Such gatherings can turn unruly and disruptive.

Myanmar border area: MEDIUM

There is a risk of cross-border spillover from occasional clashes between the Myanmar military and ethnic separatist groups inside Myanmar. Such incidents can lead to closure of border gates, an increased security posture and localised evacuations.

Northern districts of Songkhla: MEDIUM

The proximity of the northern areas of Songkhla (Hat Yai, Khlong Hoi Khong, Na Mom and Sadao districts) to the southern areas of the separatist insurgency results in increased vulnerability to periodic bombings by ethnic-Malay separatists. Such incidents also periodically occur in Hat Yai city, the region's main commercial centre with two borders connecting Malaysia. Business travellers to these areas should exercise increased vigilance.
