Madrid: Expect heightened security, traffic disruption on 6-9 June during papal visit
Level: Notice
Location: Madrid - Spain
Category: Key date, Religious event, Transport disruption
Event Date: 06 Jun 2026 - 09 Jun 2026
Expect heightened security and localised traffic disruption during Pope Leo XIV’s visit to the capital Madrid on 6-9 June. More than 14,000 police officers will be deployed in the city, particularly around locations on the pope’s itinerary. Papal events are likely to attract massive attendance, with more than 1m people reportedly expected at a prayer vigil on 6 June and Corpus Christi procession on 7 June. Plan for constrained accommodation capacity and increased demand for public transport services over this period.

- If travelling near an event, reconfirm the status of routes before setting out and allow extra time to complete journeys. Full details of the pope’s itinerary can be found here.

Impact
Key events on the pope’s itinerary expected to cause localised disruption are listed below (all times local):
6 June
7 June
- Public mass at Plaza de Cibeles from 10.00, followed by a Corpus Christi procession
8 June
While the pope is also due to visit Barcelona (Catalonia autonomous community) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands autonomous community) after Madrid, associated disruption will be most acute in the capital.
Road, bus stop and metro station closures can be expected in the vicinity of papal events. Notable road closures announced by the authorities include Calle Alcala from Plaza de Cibeles to Plaza de la Independencia, Paseo de la Castellana, Paseo del Prado from Plaza de Cibeles to Plaza de Canovas del Castillo, and Paseo de Recoletos.
The Madrid City Council has announced that EMT buses and Bicimad bicycles will be free to use until 9 June. Madrid Metro has also stated that services will be increased along most lines for the duration of the pope’s visit. Nonetheless, public transport services are liable to experience substantial congestion due to high demand and limited alternative routes to and from event locations.
Small protests are possible in the vicinity of key events. While most of these are likely to remain peaceful, some demonstrators may attempt to disrupt proceedings. The authorities have implemented robust security measures, reducing the likelihood of any significant breach, though minor scuffles may occur.
There will also be a heightened risk of opportunistic crime, particularly around open-air events at Plaza de Lima and Plaza de Cibeles, due to the presence of large crowds.
